Gonorrhoea is a very common sexually transmitted infection which, if left undetected, can lead to severe health complications. Our Instant Gonorrhoea test provides rapid results, available within 20 minutes while you wait at the clinic. This test is highly accurate from just 14 days after an incident of concern.
Where can I have this test?
The Better2Know Instant Gonorrhoea test is available in:
For a comprehensive STI test, you may want to consider booking our Instant Six Screen, testing for HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
How long do results take?
The Instant Gonorrhoea test takes around 20 minutes to run.
What samples are required?
This Instant Gonorrhoea test requires a swab sample to be taken from the vagina for women or the urethra for men. Taking a swab sample can feel slightly uncomfortable, but it is necessary to collect the sample from the likely infected area in order for the test to be accurate.
It is also possible to have a Gonorrhoea infection in your throat or your rectum if you have engaged in oral or anal sex. If you suspect you may have an infection in these parts of your body, it is important that you tell our booking team so that we can get you the correct test. For oral or rectal testing, we also require a swab sample to be collected, but these will then be sent to our main CPA accredited laboratory.
How does the test work?
Once the sample has been collected, your clinician will mix it with a special chemical solution and introduce this to a highly-specialised testing device. As the sample is absorbed into the test strip, a line will appear to indicate that the test has run successfully. If a second test line also appears, this indicates that you have a Gonorrhoea infection.
When can I have this test?
To be sure that the test is accurate, you need to wait at least 14 days from the day you think you may have been exposed to the infection until the day you are tested. This is important as it gives the bacteria time to grow to detectable levels in your body. If you test earlier, you may get a negative test result which is not accurate.
Can both men and women have this test?
This test is suitable for both men and women. Men may find that the urethral swab is uncomfortable, however, the sample collection process is quick.
What happens if I test positive?
If you test positive for Gonorrhoea, your clinician will write you a prescription during your appointment. There is no additional cost to you for this private prescription. Your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic that is right for you and will treat the infection. You must then visit a pharmacy to purchase the antibiotics required.
